The Holiday Inn & Suites Front Royal Blue Ridge Shadows is an award winning 124-room full service, conference hotel with a Houlihan’s Restaurant + Bar and Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Course. We are seeking a dedicated and loyal Assistant Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of the property under the guidance of Brent C Jackson, General Manager, a 2003 JMU Graduate (Hospitality and Tourism Management).

Job Description:
Provide day-to-day leadership and direction by maximizing financial returns, driving development of people, creating and maintaining a unique guest experience, executing on brand standards, assisting in accounting practices and building awareness of hotel and brand in the local community.

Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree / higher education qualification / equivalent in Hotel Administration, Business Administration, or two or more years of prior hotel management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must speak fluent English. Other languages encouraged.

Student Spotlight: Mara Metroka

Hometown: Huntington, PA

Mara is a special events intern at Cairnwood Estate located in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. Cairnwoood was built in the 1890’s and is one of three historic properties that make up the Bryn Athyn Historic District. The Estate includes a main house, courtyard, garden house and formal gardens; and is a popular venue for lavish weddings, galas and social events. Mara works the events held at Cairnwood, but that is just one of many things listed in her job description. She also serves as a receptionist — which has helped her overcome her fear of phone conversations, helps re-order merchandise for the gift shop, and connects with clients & vendors concerning details for their events.

A Bryn Athyn native, Mara lives just 5 minutes away from Cairnwood but never considered it a place of employment until she left home to come to JMU. She landed the internship by first getting in touch with the event planner and seeing if it would be possible to shadow her for a day. The answer was yes, and Mara was offered the position back in April 2012.

ImageThe internship is unpaid, but some job perks at Cairnwood include: flexible hours, meeting new people, and working alongside a supportive staff. Mara’s favorite aspect of the job is “being a part of such a great business and community.”  She has learned so much from this internship experience, but one of the main things is the importance of trust and integrity within a company. Cairnwood is a very large, well-known venue but it is reassuring to know that the staff is always looking out for the well-being of their clients and guests.

Mara would recommend this internship to a fellow Hospitality student because of the hands on experience a smaller company can offer. She also said this internship is a way to network with different vendors, which could become a future job opportunity.
