Where: Festival Ballroom

All JMU students! The Fall 2012 Career Fair will provide full-time and internship opportunities to all majors. Current JMU students (undergraduate and graduate) and JMU alumni are welcome to attend. Remember to dress professionally, research employers of interest, and bring hard copies of your resume. There is a list provided of companies attending on the Recruit-A-Duke website. For directions on how to view the list and sign in, please click HERE! There will be a Linkedin photo-booth set up at the Fair so students can have a professional picture taken while looking their best. There will also be a chance to win a $1000 scholarship! Just sign in at a kiosk when you arrive and complete the survey before you leave to be entered into the drawing.

Some tips on how to prepare for the Career Fair:

  • Have your resume ready. This will be a vital reference tool for employers. Career and Academic planning offers both instructions on resume development and resume review services. For more details please visit their website.
  • Do your research. Know relevant information about the companies of your interest. On Recruit-A-Duke, you can read an overview of the position’s info. Make sure you are aware of the companies’ overall description, mission, and any current news.
  • Prepare a Plan of Action. Give some thought before you approach an employer. You want to introduce yourself, demonstrate your interest in the organization, and be prepared to discuss your education and work experiences.
  • “Elevator Speech”. Be prepared to share a one-minute summary about yourself, as it will introduce you to the employer in a meaningful and effective manner. Include where you are now (your degree, program, year in college), where you have been (your career-related experience), and where you are going (your future goals). Share your interest in the organization and what you have to offer them. Want to stand out? Mention something relevant about their company that you learned as a result of your research.
  • Dress appropriately. A suit is the best possible choice for men and women. Remember that it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Women: pants, or skirts / dresses should be at least to the knee, styled hair, shoes should be closed toe, wearing hose is recommended, and removal of jewelry from visible piercings. Men: conservative shirt and tie, polished shoes, styled hair, and removal of jewelry from all visible piercings.
